JONATHAN BEARD composes and arranges music for visual media, albums, and the concert stage, based in Los Angeles. Combining a unique aesthetic of symphonic depth, emotional nuance, and/or synthesized funk, his work has been heard across broadcast and cable television, and in both short and feature films. A recipient of the ASCAP Henry Mancini Composition Scholarship, he has received accolades for his music from diverse corners of the arts spectrum, from music publications – of a concert work, critic D.J. Carlyle quipped “this is music of high technique and accessible feeling that can only be described as The Real Thing” – to individuals of note: Grammy winning film composer Charles Fox has called Beard “a true bona-fide young talent,” and producer Jack Kohler says “his creativity is mesmerizing.”
Jonathan has received commissions and performances from an eclectic group of ensembles, including numerous Grammy nominees and winners. Artists include the Pacific Symphony of Orange County, the Debut Orchestra, jazz great Vince Mendoza, international concert cellist Antonio Lysy, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, and the Los Angeles Master Chorale Chamber Singers, among others. In 2005, Jonathan was commissioned to write his first Symphony, for his alma mater’s UCLA Philharmonia Orchestra.
In addition to film and concert composing, Jonathan’s arrangements of music by other film composers have been heard in Europe and Africa, and he has worked as an orchestrator/arranger on projects for Disney, Warner Brothers, Sony, and numerous TV networks.
Jonathan remains highly committed to music education. In 2011, he joined the faculty of the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA, specializing in teaching electronic composition and orchestration/arranging. He also writes and conducts workshops on behalf of the Los Angeles Philharmonic education program throughout the LA area. Through his work with Education Through Music - Los Angeles, he co-founded an after-school chamber orchestra for at-risk youth in downtown LA, for which he has served as one of two principal conductors. He has spoken across the country, most recently delivering lectures on film scoring and electronic music production at conferences in Seattle, Honolulu, and Los Angeles. Jonathan is both a writing and publishing member of BMI.
